What is neurodiversity affirming, and what does it mean?
Hi friends! My name is Briana and we are a neurospicy family. I am newer to the neurodiversity affirming term but ever since learning about it, I am glad I heard about it so early into our journey! Here is a little breakdown about what being neurodiversity affirming means!
Neurodiversity affirming refers to the recognition and acceptance of the natural variation in neurological traits, including differences in cognition, behavior, and sensory processing.
Basically this concept suggests that neurological differences like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others, are simply part of the natural spectrum of human diversity rather than being classified solely as disorders or deficits.
Neurodiversity is recognizing that individuals with neurological differences and embracing that each and every single person can bring unique perspectives, skills, and strengths to society. With all of these differences, it can lead to innovation, creativity, and alternative ways of thinking that can be valuable in various contexts.
With accepting neurodiversity, we do challenge the stigma and negative stereotypes often associated with neurological conditions. This shift in perspective helps reduce discrimination and promotes a more inclusive and understanding society.
You will want to focus on approaches that prioritize the autonomy and self-determination of these neurodiverse individuals. What does that mean? Well it is respecting their choices and decisions regarding interventions, therapies, and accommodations that may affect their lives.
We want to focus on accommodating for these individuals. Instead of focusing solely on finding "cures" for these neurological conditions. Why don’t we just create environments that accommodate and support the needs of these neurodiverse brains instead! This might involve adjusting educational settings, workplace conditions, or social interactions to better suit their strengths and challenges.
Viewing neurological differences through a neurodiversity lens aligns with social justice principles, as it advocates for equal rights, opportunities, and access for all individuals, regardless of their neurological makeup.
Embracing neurodiversity can have positive effects on their mental health and well-being. When society accepts and supports them, it can reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression often associated with being misunderstood or stigmatized.
Neurodiversity affirming perspectives promote a more inclusive and accepting society that values the contributions and experiences of all individuals. It's important because it challenges outdated notions of "normality," supports individual autonomy, and fosters a more compassionate and equitable world for everyone.
